Mat thickness is the specification people get wrong most often, usually by buying the thickest mat available. Thickness trades joint comfort against stability, and the right answer depends entirely on what you do on the floor.
Thickness by what you actually do
| Thickness | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 2–3 mm | Travel, hot yoga, balance-heavy practice | Hard on knees and elbows |
| 4–5 mm | General yoga, mobility, most people | The sensible default |
| 6–8 mm | Core work, stretching, sore knees | Standing balance gets wobbly |
| 10 mm+ | Floor exercise, planks, physio work | Not a yoga mat; too soft to stand on |
If you stand on it, go thinner
Every millimetre of foam between your foot and the floor is a millimetre your ankle has to stabilise through. In a standing balance posture a 10 mm mat actively works against you. If your practice is mostly standing, 4 mm is plenty.
If you kneel on it, go thicker
Kneeling, planking and any physio floor work is where thickness earns its money. If your knees complain on a 4 mm mat, the fix is either a 6–8 mm mat or a folded towel under the knee — not a thicker mat for everything.
Length and width matter more than people expect
Standard mats are about 68 inches long. If you are taller than about 5 ft 10, your hands or feet will hang off in a full-length pose. Look for 72 inches. A wider mat (26–30 inches instead of 24) makes a bigger difference to comfort than an extra two millimetres of foam.
Grip: the specification nobody prints
Grip depends on the surface texture and on whether your hands sweat. A brand-new mat often feels slick because of a manufacturing film — wash it once with a damp cloth and mild soap and let it dry fully before deciding it is faulty. For hot practice, a mat towel over the mat beats any mat surface.
Materials, briefly
- PVC — grippy, durable, cheapest, not biodegradable.
- TPE — lighter, softer, recyclable, wears faster.
- Natural rubber — best grip, heaviest, has a smell for the first week, not for latex allergies.
Care, so it lasts
Wipe it down and hang it to dry rather than rolling it away damp; rolling a wet mat is how mats start to smell. Roll with the top surface facing out so the edges lie flat next time.
